Abstract

A 39-year-old female with Behcet disease presented with a macular hole retinal detachment. The macular hole was detected after several episodes of inflammation and chronic macular edema. Retinal hemorrhages and white sheathing of the retinal vessels around the macula were present preoperatively. Intraoperatively, no posterior vitreous detachment was found and after vitreous surgery with removal of the posterior vitreous cortex around the macular hole, the retina reattached. These findings suggest that tangential traction by the attached vitreous cortex and ischemic changes in the retinal macula might have played important roles in the pathogenesis of macular hole in this case.
