Congenital mature teratoma based on the tongue: A case report

Teratomas are defined as true neoplasms composed of three germinal layers, and these tumors arise from sacral lesions in most cases. We report an extremely rare case of a teratoma developing from the tongue. A female patient, weighing 3,302 g at birth, was born at the end of the 40th week of gestation. As she had a severe respiratory disorder because of an intraoral tumor, immediate intratracheal intubation and resuscitation were performed. She underwent surgery to excise the tumor at 20 days after birth. The excised tumor measured 8 × 7 cm. Histologically, the tumor was diagnosed as a mature teratoma, containing cartilage, bone, skin, retinal tissue, tracheal epithelium, and other tissues that arose from all three germinal layers.
