Abstract

Over 20 years have passed since the development of FNA, and because of its low cost and low complications it has become an indispensable procedure in the arsenal of thyroid tumor diagnosis. The earliest reports of the utility of cytology date back to the 1970s. It was eventually replaced by the echo-guided FNA that we have today and further improvements in predictive value and early detection of cancer are still being sought. This section evaluates data published since 2000.
