Mechanism and biological significance of sequential cleavages of CD44 - A potential molecular target for cancer therapy

Abstract

CD44 is an adhesion molecule that interacts with hyaluronic acid (HA) and is implicated in diverse biological processes. Recently, CD44 has been shown to undergo sequential proteolytic cleavages in its ectodomain and intramembranous domain. These cleavages are emerging as key regulatory events for the CD44-dependent cell-matrix interaction and signaling pathway and can be therapeutic targets for cancer invasion.
