N2 - (Cell Reports 26, 1033–1043.e1–e5; January 22, 2019) This article has been retracted at the request of the authors. The article reports the development of a method of fiberless optogenetics using lanthanide micro-particles (LMPs). Following an anonymous report, Nagoya University began an investigation of data and procedures in the paper and concluded that images reported in Figures 3E, S3, and S4 contain data falsification and fabrication. Specifically, the two upper panels in Figure 3E do not report a representative result. The insets in two lower panels in Figure 3E are not magnified images, and the inset in the left lower panel in Figure 3E is identical to the inset in the right lower panel in Figure S3B. The insets in the two left lower panels in Figure S3B are identical. The two left upper panels in Figure S3C do not represent experimental evidence. In Figure S4A, four pairs of panels are identical and four additional pairs of panels are unusually similar. Graphs in Figure S4B have unusually low variabilities with unusually low standard deviations. Under these circumstances, the authors believe that the most responsible course of action is to retract the paper, and they sincerely apologize to the scientific community for any inconvenience resulting from the publication and retraction of this manuscript.
