A 45-year-old male underwent upper endoscopy at our hospital because of dysphagia and high fever. He was diagnosed as having severe esophageal candidiasis based on endoscopic findings showing thick yellowish white slough, entirely covering the esophageal mucosal surface. Candida pseudohyphae in esophageal biopsies was identified using II·E staining, as well as PAS staining. Moreover, C. albicans was isolated from esophageal biopsies. Further examination demonstrated HIV infection. On encountering a patient with severe esophageal Candidiasis, AIDS should be considered as a possible cause.
