The status of pet-keeping in patients with adult bronchial asthma was retrospectively analyzed from their medical records. As a result, the rate of pet-keeping, age distribution and the type of pet were found to be almost comparable to those in healthy subjects. Although variables such as the level of total serum IgE and the number of patients with RAST-positive to animal allergen-specific IgE were significantly greater in the pet-keeping group than in the non-pet-keeping group, there were also some such positive patients in the latter group. In the pet-keeping group, multiple sensitization was observed to multiple animal allergens, as well as mites and house dust (HD). Amongst the households keeping dogs/cats, none of the patients accepted removal of their pets according to the provisions of asthma guidance; the need for pet control measures should be provided for in the future.
