Purpose: To assess the clinical usefulness of multifocal electroretinograms (mfERGs) obtained using the RETIscan™ system, which is driven by an averaging procedure. Methods: The subjects were volunteers (3 controls) without any visual abnormality and 4 patients with macular hole (3 patients) or acute zonal occult outer retinopathy (AZOOR; 1 patient). mfERGs were obtained with the RETIscan™ system (base rate 14.5 Hz) and with the VERIS™ System (base rates of 18.75 and 75 Hz). Results: mfERGs were obtained from all subjects. The central response obtained at the low base rate consisted of a smaller positive peak on the rising slope of a larger positive peak. Attenuation in the response was noted corresponding to a lesion in patients; however, broad attenuation in the response in a patient with AZOOR was not clear on the RETIscan™ mfERGs. Conclusions: The RETIscan™ system can be used to record mfERGs clinically. The waveforms differ from those in mfERGs obtained using the VERIS™ system due to the low base rate of the RETIscan™. The RETIscan™ averaging procedure results in less elimination of noise and greater flexibility in recording.
