The combined effects of polaprezinc and Marzulene S (MZ S) on various experimental models of gastric and duodenal lesions, were investigated in rats. Polaprezine and MZ S dose dependently prevented the development of gastric and duodenal lesions induced by absolute ethanol, ammonia, indomethacin or mepirizole. The ED50 of polaprezinc and that of MZ S for suppressing gastric and duodenal lesions were remarkably when these drugs were used in combination. ED50 of polaprezinc and MZ S in absolute ethanol induced lesions were equally or less than the theoretical values calculated on the basis of additive action. The synergistic effect of polaprezine and MZ S in suppressing of ammonia, indomethacin, or mepirizole induced lesions were observed. These marked synergistic potentiation of polaprezinc and MZ S may be due to compensatory coordination of both drugs on the difference of actions. These results suggest that combination of polaprezinc and MZ S may be beneficial for the treatment of gastric lesions in clinical therapy.
