A totally implantable centrifugal artificial heart is developed. With a preliminary plastic pump, Gyro PI-601, anti-traumatic character, antithrombogenicity and pump system feasibility are concluded. To improve the biocompatibility for a long term implantation, the material conversion from polycarbonate to titanium alloy proceeded. The titanium alloy showed the least platelet adhesive property among six medical grade materials: polycarbonate; polyethylene; silicon carbide; alumina ceramic; pure titanium; and Ti6A14V. The long-term left ventricular assist device (LDVA) implantation of this titanium pump for the permanent implantation of Gyro PI-2702, and the biocompatibility test are presented.
