Electroretinographic analysis of macular cone and rod systems in macular diseases

This study used the focal macular cone electroretinogram (FMCERG) with component analysis and the focal macular rod electroretinogram (FMRERG) to examine retinal function in patients with known retinal dystrophies. Both methods detected abnormalities that were not observable with the Ganzfeld electroretinogram. Furthermore, component analysis of results obtained with the FMCERG permitted localization of dysfunction to specific retinal layers. These results indicate that both previously described and newly reported macular dystrophies can be categorized into macular cone-rod or rod-cone syndromes by means of the FMCERG and the FMRERG.
