Immunological abnormalities

The pathogenesis of Behçet's disease (BD) is still unclear. Both genetic and environmental factors contribute to the onset of BD, although immunological abnormalities are thought to play an important role. Genetics are responsible for autoinflammation and an underlying immunological condition, while the activation of innate and adaptive immune systems are triggered by environmental factors such as bacterial or viral infections. Underlying immunological abnormalities can lead to a unique expression profile of cytokines associated with Th1 or Th17 and induce both cytotoxicity and neutrophil-dependent inflammation, which are involved in the pathogenesis of BD.
