In transanal local excision of tumours in the lower rectum, protruded rectal mucosa opposite the lesion often obstructs the surgical field. Another hand can be indispensable in the attempt to get proper sight of the unilateral lesion, for controlling the usual anal retractor. To exclude the protruded rectal mucosa and to get a better fixed surgical field in the lower rectum, a new three-bladed anal retractor with one long blade (F-type anal canal retractor), connected to the Octopus retractor holder, has been developed and used for minimally-invasive transanal surgery (MITAS) for tumours in the lower rectum.
