It is not easy to forecast occlusion at the time of distraction end, and further to decide preoperatively or change postoperatively the direction and the length of distraction in maxillofacial surgery. We believe that the greatest problem of the maxillo-mandibular distraction is collapse of the occlusion and that it is important to keep this to a minimum. We should refrain from any unprepared distraction, and perform the accurate plan, operation, postoperative management to form a suitable occlusion for astication, and concretely to avoid the formation of an anterior open bite and a lateral cross bite. These are very important to prevent postoperative early relapse. So it is essential for us to cooperate with the orthodontists closely to push forward the treatment.
