N2 - Stent thrombosis has been shown to be a devastating complication after coronary stenting, although it occurs rarely. From June 2004 to July 2006, stent thrombosis occurred in 5 of 999 patients (0.5%) who underwent sirolimus-eluting stent (SES) implantation. One patient died and 3 patients developed myocardial infarction. All of these patients had several risk factors for stent thrombosis, such as diabetes, renal failure, type C lesions, stent underexpansion and incomplete lesion coverage, whereas premature discontinuation of ticlopidine was seen in only 1 patient. In conclusion, particular attention is needed when SES are implanted in patients at high risk of stent thrombosis.
