N2 - Purpose of Review: Gradual decline in swallowing functions occurs people age and may lead to the loss of swallowing safety and efficiency. This review article summarizes recent findings related to swallowing disorders in the elderly and discusses possible interventions. Recent Findings: Age-induced changes include declines in general sensory perception and the mass and strength of the swallowing-related muscles. Geriatric conditions such as frailty, sarcopeni, and specific diseases may further exacerbate the deterioration of swallowing function. Comprehensive interventions are required including resistant training, oral and pharyngeal sensory stimulation, oral care, and nutrition therapy. Summary: Swallowing disorders in the elderly are multifactorial. A comprehensive approach is warranted for dysphagia management among older populations.
