Helical tomotherapy is an integrated radiotherapy technique which combines IMRT capabilities with CT image guidance in a single piece of equipment. The combination of the hardware and a series of processes make tomotherapy an ideal machine for image guided adaptive radiotherapy (IGART). This is the first helical tomotherapy system in clinical use. It employs 51 arc segments per rotation and has 64 binary leaves. This unrivalled modulation capability is especially useful to maintain homogeneous dose distributions to the target while avoiding neighboring normal tissue structures. Some tomotherapy characteristics, processes and capabilities are described.
